When everyone laughs
Almost everyone has laughed along at something that wasn't funny. That doesn't make anyone a bad person. What matters is what happens next.
Why people laugh along
Wanting to belong is a real need, not a character flaw. When everyone is laughing, not laughing feels like falling out of the group. The laugh is often out before you've had time to think. That's exactly what happens to Leo in the story "Fitting in."
Speaking up without giving a speech
You don't have to lecture the whole group. Short sentences often work better: "Let it go." "Delete it." "That's not funny." When you say something, even quietly, you give other people permission to say something too.
Often all it takes is one more voice to change the mood. In the story, that's John.
If you realize it too late
You can still apologize afterward, to the person directly, without an audience. "I laughed earlier, that was messed up, I'm sorry." It doesn't undo anything, but it shows them they're not alone.
Videos and photos of other people
Forwarding an embarrassing video makes the laughing bigger and last longer. In many countries, sharing images of someone without their consent can break the law or school rules. The simplest thing: don't forward it, ask for it to be deleted, and if it gets worse, tell a teacher or another adult.
If someone is being targeted again and again, that's bullying. You can find help on our help page.
FAQ
Is it my fault if I laughed along?
You're responsible for what you do now. An honest apology is a good start.
What if my friends get mad when I say something?
That can happen. But often others in the group are thinking the same thing and just don't dare say it. One short, calm sentence is enough.
When should I tell an adult?
When someone is targeted again and again, when photos or videos are being shared, or when you're worried about someone.
